Adaptation and application of the erosion potential method for tropical soils1 Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Sakuno,Natanael Rodolfo Ribeiro; Guiçardi,Augusto Cesar Ferreira; Spalevic,Velibor; Avanzi,Junior Cesar; Silva,Marx Leandro Naves; Mincato,Ronaldo Luiz.
ABSTRACT The water erosion process has a considerable negative effect on tropical soils, causes soil losses from arable land and reduces the capacity to support surrounding ecosystems. Estimating soil losses caused by water erosion is fundamental for evaluating the impacts of various production systems. Therefore, improving soil loss estimates via the adaptation of models for different edaphoclimatic environments is necessary for estimating local geographic and climatic differences. This study aimed to adapt, apply and evaluate the potentialities of the Potential Erosion Method for Latosols of the Hydrographic Subbasin of Caçús Stream, southern Minas Gerais State. Geological, topographic, pedological, climatic and land use and occupation data were...

Aggregate stability in soils cultivated with eucalyptus PAB
Avanzi,Junior Cesar; Norton,Lloyd Darrell; Silva,Marx Leandro Naves; Curi,Nilton; Oliveira,Anna Hoffmann; Silva,Mayesse Aparecida da.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the aggregate stability of tropical soils under eucalyptus plantation and native vegetation, and assess the relationships between aggregate stability and some soil chemical and physical properties. Argisols, Cambisol, Latosols and Plinthosol within three eucalyptus-cultivated regions, in the states of Espírito Santo, Rio Grande do Sul and Minas Gerais, Brazil, were studied. For each region, soils under native vegetation were compared to those under minimum tillage with eucalyptus cultivation. The aggregate stability was measured using the high-energy moisture characteristic (HEMC) technique, i.e., the moisture release curve at very low suctions. This method compares the resistance of aggregates to slaking on a...

Agronomic and P recovery efficiency of organomineral phosphate fertilizer from poultry litter in sandy and clayey soils PAB
Sá,Jerusa Maia e; Jantalia,Cláudia Pozzi; Teixeira,Paulo César; Polidoro,José Carlos; Benites,Vinícius de Melo; Araújo,Adelson Paulo.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate agronomic and P recovery efficiencies of a granulated organomineral phosphate fertilizer (OMF) produced from poultry litter, compared with those of monoammonium phosphate (MAP), in soils with different textures. The experiment followed a 2x2x4+2 factorial arrangement, with two Oxisols (sandy loam and clay loam textures), two sources of P (OMF and MAP), four levels of P (50, 100, 200, and 400 mg kg-1), besides two control treatments without P application. The treatments were evaluated in 10-kg pots filled with soil, during four successive cultivations of corn without replacing the P absorbed by the plants, in order to evaluate the actual and residual effects of the fertilizers. Available P contents in the...

Amazon landforms and soils in relation to biological diversity Acta Amazonica
Sombroek,Wim.
Thirteen main landform units are distinguished for the whole of the forested Amazon region, each with its specific soil pattern and vegetation structure. These landform-soil-vegetation units are delineated on a small-scale map and illustrated by a schematic cross-section. Floristic diversity of the gamma type is to be highest on the steepland-and-valley complexes of the Andean fringe, on the crystalline shield uplands, on the inselberg complexes, and on the eutric variant of the western sedimentary plains. Endemism is expected to be highest on the sandy plains, and parts of the table lands and inselberg complexes. Speciation, linked to the concept of forest refuge areas, is likely to be highest on the sandstone table lands, on the stretches of Amazon...

Assessment of Trace Element Contents in Soils and Water from Cerrado Wetlands, Triângulo Mineiro Region Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Ribeiro,Bruno Teixeira; Nascimento,Diogo Costa; Curi,Nilton; Guilherme,Luiz Roberto Guimarães; Costa,Enio Tarso de Souza; Lopes,Guilherme; Carneiro,João Paulo.
ABSTRACT In the Brazilian Cerrado biome, there are wetlands locally known as “Veredas”, which are swampy plains between hills and rivers. Since the 1970’s, the Cerrado biome has been gradually converted to livestock, crop, or forestry production. Until now, very few studies were conducted to evaluate the baseline contents of trace elements in Cerrado wetland soils. Due to their position in the landscape (bottom lands), the wetlands are potentially susceptible to contamination by runoff and/or leaching from surrounding areas at higher altitudes. This work evaluated the As, Cd, Pb, Ni, Zn, Cu, Mn, and Fe contents in soils from six wetlands (undisturbed and disturbed) in the Minas Gerais Triangle region, Brazil. In each wetland, we collected topsoil samples...

Availability of a soluble phosphorus source applied to soil samples with different acidicity levels Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Viégas,Ricardo Almeida; Novais,Roberto Ferreira; Schulthais,Fernanda.
Considerations on the interactions of P in the soil-plant system have a long history, but are still topical and not yet satisfactorily understood. One concern is the effect of liming before or after application of soluble sources on the crop yield and efficiency of available P under these conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of soil acidity on availability of P from a soluble source, based on plant growth and chemical extractants. Nine soil samples were incubated with a dose of 200 mg kg-1 P in soil with different levels of previously adjusted acidity (pH H2O 4.5; 5.0; 5.5; 6.0 and 6.5) and compared to soils without P application. After 40 days of soil incubation with a P source, each treatment was limed again so that all pH values...

Boron adsorption in soils from the State of São Paulo, Brazil PAB
ALLEONI,LUÍS REYNALDO FERRACCIÚ; CAMARGO,OTÁVIO ANTONIO DE.
Boron adsorption was studied in five representative soils (Rhodic Hapludox, Arenic Paleudalf and three Typic Hapludox) from the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Adsorption was higher in the clayey Oxisols, followed by the Alfisol and the coarser Oxisols. Calcium carbonate promoted an increase in the amount of adsorbed boron in all soils, with the most pronounced effect in the coarser-textured Oxisols. High correlation coefficients were found between adsorbed boron and clay and amorphous aluminum oxide contents and specific surface area (r = 0.79, 0.76 and 0.73, respectively, p < 0.01). Clay content, free aluminum oxide, and hot CaCl2 (0.01 mol L-1)-extracted boron explained 93% of the variation of adsorbed boron. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms fitted well...

Carbon losses and soil property changes in ferralic Nitisols from Cuba under different coverages Scientia Agricola
Hernández-Jiménez,Alberto; Vargas-Blandino,Dania; Bojórquez-Serrano,José Irán; García-Paredes,Juan Diego; Madueño-Molina,Alberto; Morales-Díaz,Marisol.
ABSTRACT The transformation of primary forestlands into lands under cultivation exerts an impact on the physical and chemical properties of the soils, leading to loss of carbon from the soil. The aims of this study were (1) to estimate the impact of different land use on organic carbon stock (OC-stock) and (2) to determine the clay percentage, the dispersion factor, and bulk density with regard to soil management. Thirty soil profiles were sampled as follows: four under primary forests with 80-100 years (old growth); two under secondary wood forests with 45-50 years; eight under secondary young forests with 15-25 years; four under pasture land with 15-20 years; and 12 under continuous cultivation for > 50 years. We determined the changes in OC-stock in...

Chelating agents to solubilize heavy metals from Oxisols contaminated by the addition of organic and inorganic residues Scientia Agricola
Coscione,Aline Renée; Abreu,Cleide Aparecida de; Santos,Gláucia Cecília Gabrielli dos.
Phytoremediation is an attractive technique for soils contaminated with heavy metals, especially in conjunction with chelating agents to assist metal phytoextraction. Nevertheless, their studies in Brazil are rare. Thus, the objective of the present work was to evaluate the efficiency of the chelating agents EDDS and EDTA for the solubilization of heavy metals from two Oxisols contaminated by organic sources in Jaguariúna (LVJ) and inorganic sources in Paulínia (LVP), São Paulo State, Southeastern Brazil. First, the soil samples were fractionated and the DTPA method was used to quantify heavy metals available forms. The results indicated that the metals were highly available in the soil fractions and could be solubilized by the chelating agents. The soil...

Determining the geographical origin of lettuce with data mining applied to micronutrients and soil properties Scientia Agricola
Maione,Camila; Araujo,Eloá Moura; Santos-Araujo,Sabrina Novaes dos; Boim,Alexys Giorgia Friol; Barbosa,Rommel Melgaço; Alleoni,Luís Reynaldo Ferracciú.
ABSTRACT Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) is the main leafy vegetable produced in Brazil. Since its production is widespread all over the country, lettuce traceability and quality assurance is hampered. In this study, we propose a new method to identify the geographical origin of Brazilian lettuce. The method uses a powerful data mining technique called support vector machines (SVM) applied to elemental composition and soil properties of samples analyzed. We investigated lettuce produced in São Paulo and Pernambuco, two states in the southeastern and northeastern regions in Brazil, respectively. We investigated efficiency of the SVM model by comparing its results with those achieved by traditional linear discriminant analysis (LDA). The SVM models outperformed the...

Functional diversity of bacterial genes associated with aromatic hydrocarbon degradation in anthropogenic dark earth of Amazonia PAB
Germano,Mariana Gomes; Cannavan,Fabiana de Souza; Mendes,Lucas William; Lima,Amanda Barbosa; Teixeira,Wenceslau Geraldes; Pellizari,Vivian Helena; Tsai,Siu Mui.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the catabolic gene diversity for the bacterial degradation of aromatic hydrocarbons in anthropogenic dark earth of Amazonia (ADE) and their biochar (BC). Functional diversity analyses in ADE soils can provide information on how adaptive microorganisms may influence the fertility of soils and what is their involvement in biogeochemical cycles. For this, clone libraries containing the gene encoding for the alpha subunit of aromatic ring-hydroxylating dioxygenases (α-ARHD bacterial gene) were constructed, totaling 800 clones. These libraries were prepared from samples of an ADE soil under two different land uses, located at the Caldeirão Experimental Station - secondary forest (SF) and agriculture (AG) -, and the...

Marra,Leandro M.; Oliveira-Longatti,Silvia M. de; Soares,Cláudio R.F.S.; Lima,José M. de; Olivares,Fabio L.; Moreira,Fatima M.S..
The pH of the culture medium directly influences the growth of microorganisms and the chemical processes that they perform. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of the initial pH of the culture medium on the production of 11 low-molecular-weight organic acids and on the solubilization of calcium phosphate by bacteria in growth medium (NBRIP). The following strains isolated from cowpea nodules were studied: UFLA03-08 (Rhizobium tropici), UFLA03-09 (Acinetobacter sp.), UFLA03-10 (Paenibacillus kribbensis), UFLA03-106 (Paenibacillus kribbensis) and UFLA03-116 (Paenibacillus sp.). The strains UFLA03-08, UFLA03-09, UFLA03-10 and UFLA03-106 solubilized Ca3(PO4)2 in liquid medium regardless of the initial pH, although without a significant difference...

Land-use systems affect Archaeal community structure and functional diversity in western Amazon soils Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Navarrete,Acácio Aparecido; Taketani,Rodrigo Gouvêa; Mendes,Lucas William; Cannavan,Fabiana de Souza; Moreira,Fatima Maria de Souza; Tsai,Siu Mui.
The study of the ecology of soil microbial communities at relevant spatial scales is primordial in the wide Amazon region due to the current land use changes. In this study, the diversity of the Archaea domain (community structure) and ammonia-oxidizing Archaea (richness and community composition) were investigated using molecular biology-based techniques in different land-use systems in western Amazonia, Brazil. Soil samples were collected in two periods with high precipitation (March 2008 and January 2009) from Inceptisols under primary tropical rainforest, secondary forest (5-20 year old), agricultural systems of indigenous people and cattle pasture. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis of polymerase chain reaction-amplified DNA (PCR-DGGE) using the...
